Diamonds from space

Instead of venting today about the absurd complexity of the US income tax system, I wanted to take note of a new paper in Nature Communications: A large planetary body inferred from diamond inclusions in a ureilite meteorite.

The Washington Post has a nice story on it: These diamonds from space formed inside a long-lost planet, scientists say.

In short, scientists spotted an asteroid heading towards the Earth, figured out where it hit, organized volunteers to find fragments, analyzed said fragments, and found diamonds with impurities that indicate they may have come for a planet in our solar system that was destroyed billions of years ago.

Go read the story.
