Some little improvements for flying

I don't travel that much, but I'm on a plane today. I'm feeling a bit lucky today: I was able to squeeze my carryon (a smaller, narrower one than I used to have) into a slot of available space in the overhead bin. The legroom is better than on many planes I've been on.

There were two differences, however. The first is that Terminal C in Boston has been renovated, and the JetBlue gate area (at least) is fairly pleasant now. There's a variety of seating, including cafe-style tables, more comfortable seats, some seats with cupholders, and many electrical outlets.1

In a small but pleasant change, the back of the seat has a cupholder pouch (labeled as not for use during taxi, takeoff, or landing), and the pocket design clearly separates the airline safety card from the one you can use for your stuff.

I won't say these changes make flying fun, but it does remove a little bit of the annoyance from the whole experience.

In other words, it's another reminder that the little things in design can make a noticeable difference.

  1. My only complaint about the outlets is that a set of them in the center of a small round cafe table doesn't barely leaves adequate room for the laptop. [return]
